MIFFLINTOWN, Allen L. Kauffman, 81, of Mifflintown, went on his journey to Heaven at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at his home.
Born on July 7, 1933, in Leacock Township, Lancaster County, he was a son of the late Christian and Suvilla (Smoker) Kauffman. On December 12, 1953 he married his wife, Susie L. (King) Kauffman, with whom he shared more than 60 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife he is survived by his children, Gerald Kauffman and his wife Doris, of Richfield, Joseph Kauffman and his wife Beverly, of McAlisterville, Willard Kauffman and his wife Ruth Anna, of Hanover, Marie Graybill and her husband David, of Mifflintown, Minnie Burkholder and her husband Jason, of Big Timber, Montana, Caroline McMillen and her husband Clee, of Loysville, siblings, Raymond Kauffman and his wife Minerva, of Bird-In-Hand, sister-in-law, Freda Kauffman, of Gordonville, Lillian Beiler, of Kinzers, Verda Glick and her husband, Eli, of El Salvador, Judith Beiler and her husband Edwin, of Middleburg, Iva Lapp and her husband Tom, of Gap, and he leaves behind 22 grandchildren also 7 great-grandchildren.
A son-in-law, Mark C. Lauver in 1986, a brother, Paul Kauffman in 2001, and a brother-in-law, Calvin Beiler in 2002 preceded him in death.
He attended the Lancaster Mennonite High School. His former memberships included the Snyder County Fruit Growers Assoc. and an active volunteer fire fighter in Lancaster County. He currently was a member of Lauvers Mennonite Church and he was involved with Transport for Christ (a ministry for truck drivers).
In earlier life while living in Lancaster County he worked and lived on Kauffman’s Fruit Farm, Bird-In-Hand. After moving to Juniata County in 1962 he owned and operated Seven Stars Orchard until 1989. Then he became a truck driver for himself and various other trucking companies until his retirement in 2003. During his retirement he drove the Amish for 7 years and while doing this he got to take several trips to the west coast.
Mr. Kauffman served from 1965 as the Ordained Minister of Lauvers Mennonite Church and during his tenure at the church he served from 1969 until 1983 as the Bishop of the Juniata County District for the Lancaster Mennonite Conference.
Allen was an avid reader, who liked to travel and enjoyed hunting. At one time he loved playing baseball and still loved to watch a good baseball game.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at the Lauvers Mennonite Church, 34585 Rte. 35, Richfield with Pastor Glenn Lauver officiating. Interment will follow in the adjoining church cemetery.
A viewing will be held from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at Lauvers Mennonite church.
