H. Richard “Rich” Landis, 92, originally of Mexico, died at 11:05 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at Ohesson Manor, Lewistown.
Born on September 21, 1922, in Walker Twp., Juniata County he was a son of the late Thomas E. and Mildred (Hack) Landis. On January 4, 1941 he married his surviving wife Madelyn (Isenberg) Landis with whom he shared more than 74 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Richard E. Landis and his wife Janet, of McAlisterville, Brenda K. Clark and her husband Donald, of Mexico, Suzanne Spengler and her husband Ross, of Dallas, brother, Lynne E. Landis, of Mifflintown, 9 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
Two brothers, Thomas “Marlin” Landis and Jack E. Landis preceded him in death.
He attended Juniata Joint High School, was an active member of Mexico United Methodist Church, and the Mexico Gun Club and Sportsman’s Association. For many years he served as tax collector for Walker Twp.
Mr. Landis proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, during WW II.
In earlier life, he worked for Breyers Ice Cream, American Viscose and Standard Steel. Later he served as custodian at Walker Twp. Elementary, and assisted his son at Dick’s Body Shop, in Mexico, until his retirement.
Rich’s love of the outdoors was apparent in his love of gardening, hunting and fishing. He always looked forward to fishing with his son Dick and his grandsons, Brian, Mike and Curt, as well as his son in law Don. For many years, he enjoyed traveling to Canada to fish. Being a devoted family man, he cherished the time that he spent with his family and has left a loving legacy for all of them.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 23, 2015 from the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown with Rev. Michael Sigler officiating, where full military burial honors will be accorded by the Juniata County Veterans Council. Interment will be in the Adams Cemetery, Mifflintown.
Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service, Monday at the funeral home.
