Betty S. “Bet” Houtz, 87, of Mifflintown, died at 1:45 a.m. on Friday, December 23, 2016, at the Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital.
Born August 3, 1929 in Mifflintown, Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late C. Nevin and Ethel (Gaul) Sherlock. Her late husband, Robert L. Houtz, with whom she shared 63 years of marriage, preceded her in death on March 13, 2010.
Surviving are: a daughter, Sue Ann Fleisher and her husband Daniel, of Rehoboth, Delaware; a daughter-in-law, Betty S. Houtz, of Newville; 3 grandchildren, Shannon Berkey, Erin Choquette, Lauren Peterson; 3 great grandchildren, Tate, Lane and Olivia; and her dog Lilly.
A son, Larry L. “Moe” Houtz, a brother, C. Nevin “Sonny” Sherlock, Jr. and a granddaughter, Ashley Lyne Fleisher, preceded her in death.
She was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Mifflintown where she sang in the choir for many years and the Juniata County Business and Professional Women Association. She also served on the election board for Mifflintown and was a “Gordon Girl”.
In earlier life, she served in the Prothonotary’s office of the Juniata County Courthouse, later she served as a clerk for Valley Farms, State College, after which she worked at Gordon’s Department Store, Mifflintown; before working at Beward’s Pharmacy, also of Mifflintown.
Betty loved bowling, knitting, crocheting, baking, doing puzzle books; however, her greatest joy came from spending time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
There will be no viewing and all services will be private.
Interment will be in the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Brown Funeral Homes Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown.
