Obituary for Banks A. Zimmerman Sr.



Banks A. Zimmerman, Sr., 89, of Mifflintown, passed away Saturday, September 4, 2021 at the Bridges at Brookline, Mifflintown.

Born on May 21, 1932 in Thompsontown, Juniata County, he is a son of the late Paul R. and Margaret (Strawser) Zimmerman.

On January 24, 1953, he married his late wife, Shirley E. (Fasick) Zimmerman with whom he was blessed to share more than 58 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on March 19, 2011.
Surviving are his children, Margaret I. Janowicz and her husband Jack of Lancaster, Banks A. Zimmerman, Jr. of Mifflin, Lou Ann Henry and her husband Bill of Port Royal, and Robert L. “Bo” Zimmerman and his wife Heather of Mifflintown; nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one sister, Patricia Lauver and one brother, Raymond P. Zimmerman.

Mr. Zimmerman was a graduate of Juniata Joint High School in Mifflintown and honorably served our country in the United States Army.

In earlier life, he was employed at the Mifflin Creamery and Empire Kosher, Inc. in Mifflintown, after which he was employed and retired as a Corrections Officer with the Juniata County Jail. He had also co-owned with his daughter the A & Z Sub Shop in Mifflintown and was a former Fermanagh Township Supervisor.

His memberships included being a former member of the Grace Covenant Church, a member of the Crawford-Brubaker VFW Post 5863 in Mifflintown where he served as the Past Commander and President, the American Legion Post 298 in Mifflintown, a life member of the Juniata Co. Sportsmen’s Association, and a past member of the Middle Ridge Hunting Camp.

Banks loved to bowl, hunt, go traveling with his late wife, and will be remembered for shearing sheep locally; however, his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown with Pastor Jennifer Heikes officiating. Interment will follow at the Union Memorial Gardens, Mifflintown where full military burial honors will be accorded by the Juniata County Veteran’s Council.

A viewing will be held from 5-7 PM on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at the funeral home.
