Obituary for Jimmy L. Varner



Jimmy L. Varner, 88, of McAlisterville, passed away at 4:44 PM, Friday, December 31, 2021 at the Geisinger Lewistown Hospital.

Born on October 23, 1933 in Fayette Twp., Juniata County, he is a son of the late Jonas and Edna (Dunn) Varner.

On September 22, 1954, he married his first wife, Evelyn J. (Naylor) Varner with whom he was blessed to share over 52 years of marriage before her passing on April 1, 2007. On October 23, 2009, he married his second wife, Jolene M. (Strawser) Varner with whom he was blessed to share over 12 years of marriage.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Daryl Varner and his wife Lori of Daytona Beach, FL and Trudy Henry Oberlin and her husband Michael of McAlisterville; five grandchildren, Zachariah Varner, Amber Boren and her husband Josh, Christopher Henry and his wife Nancy, Curtis Henry and his wife Alexandra, and Cody Henry and his companion Brook; and seven great-grandchildren, Benjamin Varner, Wesley Varner, Marcus Henry, Mathias Henry, Eli Henry, Nora Henry, and Agnes Henry.

In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jennifer Sarah Varner; son in law, Mark A. Henry; six brothers, Ira L. Varner, Lee W. Varner, Raymond E. Varner, J. Adam Varner, Stanley S. Varner, and Roy D. Varner; and five sisters, Ruth Phillips, Pauline Amey, Freda Rauch, Grace Hepner, and Betty Colyer.

Mr. Varner honorably served our country during the Korean War from 1954 to 1956 in the United States Army where he obtained the rank of Private First Class.

Jimmy worked various jobs before and after serving in the Army up to 1970 where he started his own business, Jimmy L. Varner Plumbing and Heating, in which he worked until 1995 when he retired. After that, he went to work for Maple Lawn Associates from 2004 until he retired a second time in 2018.

He enjoyed raising goats, hit and miss engines, playing musical instruments, and singing.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, January 6, 2022 at the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 111 Westfall St., McAlisterville, with Pastor Terry Smith officiating. Interment will be private at St. John's United Methodist Cemetery, McAlisterville where full military burial honors will be accorded by the Juniata County Veterans Council.

A viewing will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of the funeral services at 11:00 AM on Thursday at the funeral home.
