ACADEMIA, Beatrice Ann Beers, 88, of Academia died at 1:50 p.m. Saturday, May 4, 2013, at the Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin.
Born on November 21, 1924, in Academia, Juniata County, she is the daughter of the late William Edgar, Sr. and Helen Gertrude (Brackbill) Beers.
Surviving are: a brother, Silas S. Beers and his wife Marjorie (Newman) Beers, of Whiting, NJ; a sister in law, Helen G. Beers, of Mifflin; several nieces and nephews, Janet Beers, of Manchester, NJ, Susan and her husband Rev. Michael Heath Browder, of Farmville and Hopewell, VA, Steven T. Beers, of Academia, and William A. Beers and his wife Lori, of Toms River, NJ. Also surviving are three grand-nieces and a grand-nephew.
One brother, William E. Beers, Jr. preceded her in death.
She attended the Academia School and was a 1942 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown. During World War II, she worked at the W. E. and R. A. Beers Feed
and Flour Mill, in Academia. She later worked for the Bell Telephone Company in Harrisburg, after which she was employed by the Juniata Valley Bank in Mifflintown, and retired in 1986 from the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company, with 27 years of service. Bea was also active in local government serving on the Beale Twp. Election board and as the Beale Twp. Auditor, for 2 terms.
Beatrice was a member of the Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Church, in Academia, where she taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, for many years.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2013 from the Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Church, Academia with the Rev. John C. Park officiating. A private burial was held in the New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Miss Beers’ memory be made to the Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Church, c/o The Repair Fund (for the renovation of the church’s fellowship hall), 54 Church Road, Mifflin, PA 17058.
