CHAMBERSBURG, Alexander Eugene “Gene” Dumm, 82, of Chambersburg and formerly of Mifflintown died at 2:35 p.m. on Friday, September 12, 2014 at the Pinnacle Health-West Shore Hospital, Mechanicsburg.
Born on February 19, 1932 in Lewistown, Mifflin County he was a son of the late Alexander A. Dumm and Clarabelle (Peck) Dumm-Heaps. On May 6, 1955, he married his surviving wife, Joan I. (Dunkelberger) Dumm, with whom he shared more than 59 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Randy Dumm, of Tallahassee, FL; Vicki Gamby and her husband Nick, of Cookville, TN; Amy Vorhees and her husband Shaun, of Fayetteville; siblings, Barbara Fairman, of Mifflintown, Gerald Dumm, Lewistown; Marjorie Kauffman and her husband James, of Mifflintown; Elizabeth Dumm, of Mifflin, Hannah Bashore and her husband Harry, of McAlisterville and he leaves behind four grandsons, Cole Gamby, Benjamin Gamby, Seth Vorhees and Jacob Vorhees.
Mr. Dumm was a 1951 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown where he starred in basketball and football. He was also a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chambersburg, the Union Lodge F&AM #324, Mifflintown and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon Juniata Valley Forrest #88.
Gene was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
In 1988, he retired as a Division Network Manager for the United Telephone Company after 36 years of service and later owned and operated Dumm’s Telephone Service.
He was an avid golfer, loved to hunt and fish, as well as spending time at Camp Eleven. His greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren and attending their sporting events.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 16, 2014 from the Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown with the Rev. William N. Esborn officiating. Interment will follow in the Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown.
Viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday, at the church, where a masonic service will be accorded by the Union Lodge F&AM #324 at 10:45 a.m.
