I knew Greg (SGT Taylor) from 20th Ord Company Regensburg Germany - March 1987- Nov 1988
To lose Greg at such a young age is so sad. He was one of the most generous, sweetest, kindest, people I met while serving with him. Always ready for a laugh and never seem to have a bad day. We occasionally called him Captain Caveman after the cartoon of the same name, and he played it up very well. I remember him telling people he had to shave twice a day, because he was a real man, with a real beard. He would beat his chest and play to the caveman part. Always being a cut up and never having a bad word about anyone. He was a hard worker, lending a hand where he could, and very rarely having a bad word about anything.
Many people don't even know, but, he actually saved a boy from drowning at the swimming pool. I watched him dive in a pull a young boy from the deep end of a pool. The boy had fallen in, and the parents were too scared to move. Greg jumped in and pulled him out. We were all so young. When we patted him on the back and we wanted to make him feel good about it, he brushed it off with a laugh, and never mentioned it again. He never once made a fuss about it. But, that's the kind of guy he was. Just doing a job, and never making a fuss about it. Making the world a better place without ever accepting the attention or the praise for being such a good person.
We went our own ways, and only with the invention of Facebook was I able to find him less than 2 years ago. He was most generous with his kind words and seemed so excited that all the old gang was finding each other again. It is so hard to know he is gone now. His smile and kindness will be missed so much.
He will always be remembered well. The world will truly miss someone like Greg.
Respectfully,
