Gladys N. Heister, 98, of Thompsontown died at 3:35 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2016, at Brookline Manor, Mifflintown.
Born May 20, 1918, in Newton Hamilton, Mifflin County, she is the daughter of the late Charles H. and Maude (McVey) Wert. On June 11, 1939 she married her late husband; Guy R. Heister with whom she was blessed to share of more than 70 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on August 20, 2009.
Surviving are three daughters, Janice Swab and her husband Richard of Mifflintown, Kathy Carter and her husband Bill of Lewistown, Barb Smith and her husband Stephen of Thompsontown, a sister, Mary Ellen Groce of Lancaster, 8 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.
One son in infancy, Samuel W. Heister, a great-granddaughter, Alona Leach, 2 great-great-granddaughters, Angel and Chloe Crozier-Swab, 2 brothers, William Wert, Marlin Wert and 3 sisters, Dorothy McFadden, Betty Aughey and Jessie Graybill preceded her in death.
Mrs. Heister was a 1936 graduate of Port Royal High School, and a member of the East Salem United Methodist Church.
She retired in 1972 from the American Viscose Corporation, Lewistown.
Gladys enjoyed sewing, shopping, oil painting, carpentry, watching and feeding the birds, traveling to Florida with her husband for 27 winters and while in Florida being a member of the Super Sixties; however one of her greatest joys came from going out to dinner with her family.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 29, 2016, from the Lost Creek Mennonite Cemetery, Oakland Mills, with the Rev. Joseph Yorks and Pastor Wesley Stahl officiating.
There will be no viewing.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown.
The family will provide all funeral flowers, and kindly ask that memorial contributions in Mrs. Heister’s memory be made to the Juniata County Food Pantry, P.O. Box 44, Mifflintown, PA 17059.
