George M. Derr, 101, of the Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin and formerly of Mifflin died at 4:35 a.m. on Wednesday, November 23, 2016, at the village.
Born on January 25, 1915 in Mifflin, Juniata County, he was a son of the late George C. and Julia (Finely) Derr. On May 15, 1938 he married his surviving wife Janet (Kustaborder) Derr, also of the Locust Grove Retirement Village, with whom he was blessed to share more than 78 years of marriage.
Surviving are: three daughters, Donna Kauffman and her husband Marvin, Barbara Ehrenzeller and her husband Arthur, all of Mifflintown, Cheryl Miller and her husband George, of Mifflin, 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 5 step-great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren and 2 step-great-great-grandchildren.
Being the last of his generation, he was preceded in death by 4 sisters, Margaret McBlair, Dorothy Ammerman, Christiana Eby and Josephine Warner.
He was a member of the St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Mifflintown.
Mr. Derr was a veteran of WWII having served his country proudly with the U.S. Army in the European African Middle Eastern Theater.
From 1932 until 1972 he worked at the American Viscose Corp, Lewistown, and from 1972 until 1981 when he retired he was employed by Manbeck Construction, Mifflin.
George loved woodworking, hunting, fishing and helping others. He was a very kind and generous man who loved his family, especially his grandchildren.
All services are private. Interment will be in the Union Memorial Gardens, Mifflintown.
There will be no viewing.
