James D. “Jim” Hunter, 77, of Academia, died at 1:12 p.m. on Thursday, December 29, 2016 at the Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin.
Born on July 18, 1939, in Derry, Westmoreland County, PA and raised in Culpepper, VA, he was a son of the late James R. and Effie Marie (Keth) Hunter. On June 6, 1964, he married his late wife Dixie S. (Stong) Hunter, with whom he was blessed to share almost 44 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on April 5, 2008.
Surviving are 2 sisters, Carol Tharp, Rose Marie White and her husband Buddy, all of Virginia, a brother, Jerry Scott of, North Carolina, a mother-in-law, Katherine “Kit” Stong, of Academia, 3 sister-in-law’s, Patricia S. Henry and her husband Max, of Mifflin, Donna Evelyn, of East Waterford, Dorothy Niman and her husband Scott, of Mifflintown and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Hunter had proudly served with the U.S. Army and had been a member of the Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Church, Academia. Currently he was attending the McCoysville Presbyterian Church. He was a very active member of the Beale Twp. Fire Co. and a member of the VFW Post 7327, Springfield, VA.
He retired as a salesman from the Washington Tobacco Company.
In earlier life Jim liked hunting and fishing. He enjoyed watching the Washington Redskins and the Washington Nationals, also playing lottery tickets; however his greatest passion was being a member of the Beale Twp. Fire Co.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 from the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown with the Rev. Graham C. Fowler officiating. Interment will be in the McCulluch’s Mills Cemetery, Honey Grove where the Juniata County Veterans Council will accord full military burial honors.
A viewing will be held from 7 – 9 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
