MIFFLIN, Evelyn S. Riggin, 88, of Mifflin, died at 1:00 am on Monday, June 3, 2013, at the Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin.
Born on March 10, 1925, in Fayette Township, Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Annie (Leister) Swartzlander. On May 14, 1949, she married her husband, Walter L. “Walt” Riggin, with whom she shared more than 61 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on August 16, 2010.
She is survived by her children, George E. Riggin and his wife Jane, of Winter Garden, Fla., Anne L. Riggin, Walter L. Riggin, III, of McAlisterville, and she leaves behind four grandchildren, Drew Riggin, Heather Riggin, John Riggin, Michael Riggin, and two step grandchildren, Ryan Hogan and Akil Hogan.
She was the last of her generation, having been preceded in death by three sisters, Sara Shellenberger, Annie Swartzlander, and Esther Ostrum, as well as one brother, Edward Swartzlander.
Mrs. Riggin was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, McAlisterville, and the Jefferson Hospital Nurses Alumni Association. A Registered Nurse for many years, she was passionate about helping others, and was a volunteer with the Juniata Meals on Wheels, the Mifflin-Juniata Area Agency on Aging, and with various programs at the Locust Grove Retirement Village.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 am, on Saturday, July 13, 2013, from the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, McAlisterville, with her pastor, the Rev. Erin Bovendam, officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery, McAlisterville.
There will be no viewing or visitation.
