memory makes me smile
It was a snowy Saturday night in December 1983. I was out with my girlfriend and for some reason thought taking a short cut across Burd Hollow road that was covered in snow was a good idea. I think it had something to do with my hormones at the time.
Well I guess you could say I was driving to fast for road conditions, came around the corner and the 77 Thunderbird I was driving decided it wanted to go off roading, much to my dismay. I slid off the road and ended up nose down in the creek.
After a short walk to the closest house and a phone call to my mother, Donnie showed up within 30 minutes. When I walked outside he was already looking over the situation. I walked up to him and he looked at me, then he looked at my girlfriend and with that sly smile said, "out for a joy ride". I said yes sir and managed a smile myself. He back the tow truck down behind the car, hooked up and lift the car up, got back in the truck and pulled the car out with no problem.
After disconnecting the tow truck, he walked around the car and gave it the once over. He said " looks like it's your lucky night, doesn't look like there's any damage". I said lucky enough so my dad doesn't hear about this? He laughed and said not that lucky, who do you think called me? I guess they both had a good laugh about it later at the VFW.
Seems like every time it starts to snow I think of that night. I can still see that smile and hear that laugh.
